Creating a truly unique performance build means pushing beyond conventional tuning paths. Our Mercedes W202 project with the legendary M104.992 straight-six is exactly that — an exploration of engineering extremes. What started as a turbocharged daily-drivable setup evolved into a full twin-charged configuration capable of delivering 834 whp and 1174 Nm, and later in the season, with further refinements, reaching 1092 hp.<img src="https://ezycourse.b-cdn.net/5581/cmi76a3of01wowr9nblh0bhkj.jpg" alt="image" containerstyle="width: 100%; height: auto; cursor: pointer; " wrapperstyle="display: flex">This is the story — and the technical breakdown — of how we built one of the wildest M104-powered W202s in our workshop.<h2 id="6fa71d39-f7a3-44af-a7fa-62ac2a10e6d4" data-toc-id="6fa71d39-f7a3-44af-a7fa-62ac2a10e6d4" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">ENGINE PLATFORM — WHY THE M104.992?</h2>The factory M104.992 is a 3.6-liter inline-six featuring:<ul><li>Aluminum head with variable intake camshaft</li><li>Robust iron block with thick cylinder walls</li><li>Forged crankshaft from factory</li><li>Excellent oiling system for high-RPM use</li></ul>These characteristics make the M104 a surprisingly capable foundation for forced induction, provided the internals and fuel system are upgraded accordingly.<h2 id="02773177-e756-4fa1-97e5-445d244baf3e" data-toc-id="02773177-e756-4fa1-97e5-445d244baf3e" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">THE TWIN-CHARGE CONCEPT</h2>We wanted instantaneous torque at low RPM, but also extreme top-end airflow. To achieve this, we used both a turbocharger and a mechanical supercharger:<h3 id="49d313dd-b8e8-4d66-9212-d6842e0a2874" data-toc-id="49d313dd-b8e8-4d66-9212-d6842e0a2874" style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Supercharger:</h3><ul><li>Mounted upstream in the charge path</li><li>Provides immediate boost from idle</li><li>Eliminates lag and stabilizes low-RPM torque curve</li></ul><h3 id="e4d24fef-7b1c-4fb4-935c-ed0958ecad41" data-toc-id="e4d24fef-7b1c-4fb4-935c-ed0958ecad41" style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Turbocharger:</h3><ul><li>A large-frame turbo sized for top-end efficiency</li><li>Comes alive once exhaust mass flow increases</li><li>Provides the bulk of the horsepower above 4500 RPM</li></ul>To manage both systems, the supercharger runs a bypass valve system that opens once turbo boost surpasses SC output, essentially letting the turbo take over at higher RPM.This configuration retains the responsiveness of a small turbo setup, but delivers the airflow capacity of a huge turbo — the best of both worlds, at the cost of complexity.<h2 id="d18dd687-116b-4cdf-8060-694b4fa1481c" data-toc-id="d18dd687-116b-4cdf-8060-694b4fa1481c" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">FUEL SYSTEM &amp; SUPPORTING HARDWARE</h2>To feed 1000+ hp reliably, the fuel system included:<ul><li>High-flow injectors (1700cc) sized to support ethanol blends </li><li>Dual high-pressure pumps (Bosch 044)</li><li>Reinforced fuel lines and filters</li><li>Ethanol-compatible components throughout</li></ul>On the air metering side:<ul><li>Large intercooler with low-pressure drop</li><li>Custom charge piping optimized for twin-charger flow dynamics</li><li>Wastegate and blow-off strategy tuned specifically for two sources of boost</li><li>For blow off we have used BMW PWM throttle body</li></ul><h2 id="69bab4fa-ba3e-43ba-8501-19927c926fbe" data-toc-id="69bab4fa-ba3e-43ba-8501-19927c926fbe" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">ECU &amp; TUNING — POWERED BY MAXXECU STREET</h2>Engine management was handled by MaxxECU Street, chosen for its capability to support complex boost configurations and advanced safeties.Key tuning features:<ul><li>Dual boost source control</li><li>Closed-loop lambda on ethanol</li><li>Real-time knock monitoring</li><li>Custom ignition mapping for blended boost curves</li><li>Boost-by-gear and boost-by-RPM strategies</li></ul>The MaxxECU allowed us to phase out the supercharger at higher RPM while letting the turbo dominate the system — all without torque dips or transitional instability.<h2 id="e972f807-1f34-446b-8f1b-c2ce07dae8f5" data-toc-id="e972f807-1f34-446b-8f1b-c2ce07dae8f5" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">DYNO RESULTS</h2><h3 id="77d0aa71-fdbb-4634-bfd0-356a4cd31180" data-toc-id="77d0aa71-fdbb-4634-bfd0-356a4cd31180" style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">Initial Setup:</h3><ul><li>834 whp</li><li>1174 Nm</li></ul>At this stage the system was conservative, focused on reliability and clean drivability with the twin-charge architecture fully synchronized.<h3 id="2881778f-8dfe-428f-8805-8520b7554970" data-toc-id="2881778f-8dfe-428f-8805-8520b7554970" style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">End-of-Season Power Increase:</h3>After refining the boost ratio, adjusting compressor bypass control, and optimizing ignition timing under high boost, we achieved:<ul><li>1092 hp (crank equivalent, based on drivetrain loss calculations)</li></ul>This pushed the M104 to the limit of what a street-based build can handle, yet the engine maintained stability and consistent performance throughout testing.<h2 id="4fd50fb4-a9e3-4be3-8524-0ffc640a8d2a" data-toc-id="4fd50fb4-a9e3-4be3-8524-0ffc640a8d2a" style="font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600; line-height: 1.2;">CONCLUSION</h2>Building the twin-charged Mercedes W202 with the M104.992 was not just a tuning project — it was an engineering experiment that proved how far this engine platform can be pushed with the right components and calibration.From 834 whp to over 1000 hp, the car has become a benchmark for unconventional forced-induction setups and a testament to what careful design, precision machining, and advanced ECU tuning can achieve.If you're looking to explore extreme builds, complex boost strategies, or M104 performance tuning — this project stands as proof that innovation still has room in the tuning world.
