⚙️ Power vs Torque — Why the Difference Matters

It’s actually surprising how many people don’t know the difference between power and torque… especially when they really should.

To understand power, we first need to understand work.

🔧 Work is simply the transfer of energy from one thing to another.
The unit of work is the Joule (J).

1 Joule = 1 Newton of force applied over 1 meter of movement.

This is where confusion often happens, because torque also involves force and distance.

But there’s a key difference:

👉 Torque does not necessarily mean work is being done.



Understanding Horsepower & Torque

In this training I will cover the EDC17C74 Volkswagen Group. So this EDC17, its structure is a little different compared with the old VAG C46 or CP44. In this type of ECU the turbo maps are not available anymore in the software. The turbo maps are replaced with two sets of maps. One is overspeed turbo protection and one set of maps is represented by the target cylinder filling with air.

Understanding Torque Model and Fueling

In diesel ECUs like Bosch EDC16 and Bosch EDC17, the NM2IQ map is used to convert requested engine torque (Nm) into the injected fuel quantity (IQ). NM2IQ (Nm → IQ) map is a torque-to-fuel conversion table inside the ECU. It tells the ECU how many milligrams of fuel per stroke (mg/stroke) must be injected to produce a specific engine torque (Nm).

In diesel ECUs like Bosch EDC16 and Bosch EDC17, boost maps control the desired turbocharger pressure needed for a given engine operating condition. A boost map is a lookup table that defines the target intake manifold pressure (boost) based on engine speed (RPM) and fuel quantity or torque request.

Start of Injection (SOI) maps in a diesel engine are calibration tables in the engine control unit (ECU) that determine when fuel injection should begin relative to the piston position, usually expressed in degrees of crank angle before top dead center (BTDC).

The map typically uses engine speed (RPM) and engine load (often represented by fuel quantity or air mass) as its main axes. For each operating point, the SOI value specifies the optimal timing to start injecting fuel so that combustion occurs at the most efficient moment.

Advancing the SOI (earlier injection) generally improves combustion efficiency and power at higher loads and speeds, while retarding the SOI (later injection) can reduce NOx emissions and combustion noise. Therefore, SOI maps are carefully calibrated to achieve a balance between fuel efficiency, emissions, engine performance, and noise across the engine’s operating range.
